I’m an author and journalist interested in financiers, fraudsters, short sellers, shopping malls, cities and economic history. My work exposes how complex financial arrangements are transforming our lives by telling stories about the people and places they shape. I’ve reported from Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, the Channel Islands and America.
My first book, The Asset Class, is a narrative investigation of the private equity industry. It will be published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson (UK) and Grand Central (US) in 2026 and was awarded the Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant in 2024. I’m represented by Matt Turner at RCW.
Before joining the Guardian, I worked for the New Statesman as an editor and writer, and as a reporter in Washington D.C., where I covered the Federal Trade Commission. I’m a regular contributor at the Guardian Long Read, and my work has been published in the Baffler, the Atlantic, Architectural Review, the Times Literary Supplement and many other places. I have contributed to radio, including the BBC World at One, chaired panels and Q&As at various places, and run a regular speaking series in London.
